The purpose of the Research Fellowship Program is to engage students directly in serious research. Each Student Research Fellow participates in a research project under the direction of a faculty/staff member(s) who is independently interested in the area under study. The Student Research Fellow is expected to be a participant in the research, not a mere observer or helper. The nature of an appropriate project differs from discipline to discipline, but all should give the Fellow firsthand experience with productive scholarly work. Should the results of the research be published, the faculty/staff member in charge of the project is expected to acknowledge the contribution of the Student Research Fellow. Summer Student Research Fellows are obligated to refrain from employment during the period of their appointment.

Awards are made on the basis of the candidate's narrative description of the project, the candidate's academic record, the candidate's qualifications to undertake the project, and the faculty/staff member's letter of support. Acceptance of a fellowship does not preclude working for honors, and the financial need of a candidate does not enter into the awarding of fellowships.

Most fellowship programs occur during the summer. A few, however, are available during the academic year (Surdna Research Fellowships, James Stacy Coles Natural Science and Mathematics Fellowship, Doherty Coastal Studies Research Fellowships, and Martha Reed Coles Arts and Humanities Fellowships). Students participating in a research fellowship during the academic year are expected to work part-time throughout the year on the project.
