Independent study allows students to work one-on-one with faculty to pursue topics in greater depth. Whether it is to study the growth of sea urchins, learn more about changes in juvenile justice practices over the last hundred years, or current thinking about deaf education, students work with faculty members on topics of joint interest. Independent studies range from directed reading courses lasting one semester to year-long research projects designed by students to semester or year-long creative projects in creative writing, theater and dance, and music and the fine arts. Honors projects in major fields are typically organized around independent studies.
