Re: Summer Stipends Program

Summer Stipends Guidelines

Purpose -- to permit laboratory instructors working in conjunction with a faculty member to make significant revisions to a current lab or to create a new exercise(s) and/or experiment(s) during the summer when the lab instructor is not regularly scheduled to work at Bowdoin.

It is expected that this project would occupy approximately two weeks (full-time) or four weeks (half-time) of the lab instructor's time during the summer. We anticipate funding three proposals. Lab instructors cannot receive funding for more than one proposal and preference will be given to those who did not receive funding in prior years. Lab instructors with full-time, twelve-month appointments are not eligible for these funds.

Grant -- $1,000 stipend for the equivalent of two weeks at full time, plus up to $300 for equipment and supplies.

Application Process

Proposals must include:

1) A one- to two-page narrative that describes the proposed revisions to the existing lab course or, in the case of the creation of a new exercise(s) and/or experiment(s), explains its rationale and its significance for the curriculum. The language of the narrative should be accessible to non-scientists. The proposal should also explain how the project will be carried out over the course of the summer, and should make clear whether it is for two weeks or three, and if for three weeks, how the project would be modified if funded only for two weeks.
2) A letter of support for the project from a faculty member teaching the related course.
3) A budget, if requesting funds for supplies or equipment.
4) A brief c.v.
5) Copy of report/results from previous lab instructor stipend awards, if any.

Review of Proposals

The Associate Dean in consultation with the Lab Science Department faculty will review the applications and award the stipends.

Deadline

Proposals are due by 5:00 p.m. in the Office of the Dean for Academic Affairs on May 10. Awards will be announced around May 20.
