Who I am as a teacher is influenced by who I am outside the classroom. Outside the classroom, I enjoy outdoor activities, am energized by geologic research, prefer small conversations, avoid being the center of attention, and do not like to let others down. Each of these characteristics impacts how I run my classes, because I think that if I am enthusiastic and comfortable than that will positively influence the classroom dynamic. SocMy classes have multiple field laboratories, and for the advanced classes I have class and lab back-to-back to allow for extended times outdoors. I incorporate research projects into introductory and advanced classes; this presents a host of challenges and uncertainties, but also is stimulating and rewarding. In the classroom, Rachel J. Beane: Bowdoin College: GeologyI minimize lectures, emphasize small-group discussions and activities, and try to engage students in multiple ways to accommodate different learning styles. Pedagogical studies support many of the teaching methods I use, but not all students appreciate them (although many do!). I strive to accept that I might not please all students. My goal as a teacher is to help students to cultivate important skills in observation, investigation, and communication that will aid them in their future endeavors. My hope is that the students and I enjoy this experience as well.
