Advising

Advising takes many forms over the four years at Bowdoin:

  • During the first two years, students have a pre-major faculty advisor. Faculty advisors and students meet during first-year orientation to decide on such things as courses to take, activities to consider, and support resources to use. The formally assigned pre-major advisor provides the backbone of advising in the first two years, but students also create their own advising networks from their course instructors, peers, proctors, coaches, and others.
  • After declaring a major in the spring of the sophomore year, students will have an advisor in the major field. Students work with this faculty advisor, other faculty in the department, and student departmental advisors to construct a major that fits individual interests and post-college plans.
