Bowdoin College Department of Art invites applications for an artist/scholar with an expertise in sculpture whose work is grounded in studio practice, scholarship and teaching. The successful candidate’s research/studio work will situate sculpture within cultural, aesthetic, political or cognitive theories and histories. An appointment will be made at the associate or full professor level. Teaching expectation is two courses a semester. The successful candidate can expect active support for their creative work, including faculty studio space. This position requires a strong grounding in the traditional studio processes and materials (wood, metal, plaster, mold making, carving, etc.), as well as the ability to teach both figurative and abstract forms. Additional experience in other media and types of practice is also welcome.
We seek a consensus-builder with strong leadership skills who appreciates the inseparability of theory and practice. This position will develop the three dimensional aspect of an established art department. The person taking on this position will be expected to participate in administrative responsibilities of the college and the department, eventually taking on the role of department chair. Chair positions normally rotate every three years among senior members of the department.
Candidates must have an MFA, a record of effective teaching in higher education, and a demonstrated record of scholarly and creative achievement. Evidence of successful academic leadership is highly desirable. Successful candidates will also possess effective collaborative skills and a commitment to undergraduate education in a liberal arts ethos.
Applications will be accepted electronically at Careers@Bowdoin. Applicants should submit a letter of application, clearly stating their motivation for teaching at a small, liberal arts college and their vision for a visual art program. The application should also include curriculum vitae, sample syllabi, and contact information for three references. Applications should also include documentation of their own creative work, which may be submitted as a web link or submitted on either a non-returnable CD or DVD (viewable cross platform). Clearly marked CD/DVDs may be sent to:
