Research Opportunities

Each summer, Bowdoin faculty guide approximately 100 students in independent research projects. With the support of endowed funds and grant awards, the College offers students research stipends and supply money for summer research fellowships, allowing students from virtually every discipline to delve deeply into unique research questions. Recent summer research fellowship include:

  • An archaeological survey project of Merrymeeting Bay (Sociology/Anthropology);
  • A study of hydrogen bonding interactions and peptide fragmentations using gas-phase H/D exchange and collisional dissociation techniques (Chemistry);
  • Museological work and research at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Museum (Arctic Studies); and
  • Support for a student to travel to Korea to assess and analyze public opinion concerning Korean unification.

For those Bowdoin students who pursue advanced degrees, successful undergraduate research fellowship experiences make them more attractive candidates for admission to post-graduate institutions and better prepares them for academic success.
