Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor starting Fall 2010. We seek someone who appreciates the rich balance of pure and applied mathematics that our department presently enjoys, and we will give priority to applicants whose research lies in Algebraic or Differential Geometry, Computational Mathematics, Dynamical Systems & Ergodic Theory, or fields which similarly bridge the research interests of our department.

Bowdoin values a strong commitment to research and a promise of successful scholarly engagement as well as a dedication to teaching excellence in a liberal arts environment.  The college provides excellent research support and the regular teaching load is two courses per semester.  The successful candidate will be expected to share with all the members of the department in the teaching of introductory and core courses, as well as to teach major-level courses in one or more of the following general areas:  Algebra, Analysis, Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Biology, Probability, Statistics, Geometry, and Topology.  Ph.D. in hand by date of appointment is preferred; advanced ABDs will be considered.

Bowdoin College is now accepting electronic submissions.  Please visit MathJobs.org (see www.mathjobs.org) to submit a cover letter, an AMS application cover sheet, a resume, a statement of research plans, a statement on teaching philosophy, and contact information for 3 references who will provide letters of recommendation.

Review of applications will begin December 7, 2009, and will continue until the position is filled.  We expect to participate in the job fair at the Joint Math Meetings in San Francisco in Jan 2010, and to recruit at the SACNAS conference in Dallas in October 2009.
