Status of the Class of 2011

Based on survey responses, 95% of the Class of 2011 reported that they were employed, attending graduate school or on a fellowship.

  • 68% reported that they were employed, consistent with the Class of 2010.
  • 26% indicated that they were attending school, up from 15% for the Class of 2010 and perhaps reflecting the fact that the survey was administered 18 months after graduation vs. only twelve months out for the Class of 2010.
  • 4% reported that they were “in transition” (seeking employment or other).

Graduate, professional, or other school

Data from the Class of 2011 Senior survey indicated that 75% of respondents intended to pursue an additional degree at some point.  Not surprisingly, the number of alumni pursuing advanced degrees has increased since graduation. For example, nineteen respondents are pursuing medical degrees now versus only eight at the time of graduation.

  • 87% reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their current situation.
  • Although 87% are satisfied, 35% indicated that they plan to change jobs in the coming year.
  • 43% indicated that their long-term career plans have not changed since graduation, while 24% are unsure.
  • 58% have had just one job or experience since graduating from Bowdoin.

Personal Health and Involvement

Alumni may not be eating as well as they did at Bowdoin, but a larger percentage (76% vs. 61%) agrees that they are getting adequate sleep.  Developing close friendships and finding a balance between work and extracurriculars appear to be more challenging after leaving Bowdoin.

Other

When asked if Bowdoin had prepared them in terms of certain skills and abilities, over 70% of survey respondents agreed or strongly agreed that Bowdoin had prepared them.  The only area where they did NOT feel prepared was “manage their personal finances.”  Although they are well prepared, graduates are not necessarily using these skills frequently.  For example, 96% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that Bowdoin prepared them to write effectively.  However, only 68% use that skill frequently.
