Personal Health and Involvement

A comparison of responses from the Class of 2013 Senior and One Year Out surveys shows that since graduating, respondents are doing a better job getting adequate sleep, keeping on top of commitments and managing their time and stress. They are finding it more difficult to develop close friendships since graduating. The percentage of respondents who strongly agree with these six “wellness” statements is at a three year high for all items except manage my time successfully.

Preparation at Bowdoin

When asked if Bowdoin had prepared them in terms of certain skills and abilities, over 75% of survey respondents agreed or strongly agreed that Bowdoin had prepared them. The only area where they did NOT feel prepared was “manage their personal finances” (39%)  There are areas where graduates are well prepared, but are not necessarily using the skills frequently. For example, 85% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that Bowdoin prepared them to "lead and supervise groups of people doing a task."  However, only 51% use that skill frequently at this point in their careers.

The chart below illustrates the gaps between preparation and use. For instance, 92% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that Bowdoin prepared them to “Serve the Common Good.” However, only 50% are frequently serving the Common Good, resulting in a gap of 42 points. Overall, preparation appears to be stronger than usage for most skills and abilities. There are three areas where respondents felt slightly “underprepared” (10 point gap or less) versus how frequently they use the skill: “Practice basic etiquette;” “Live a healthy & balanced life;” and “Manage my time and employ organizational systems.” The one area where there is a dramatic gap (-49 points) is “Manage personal finances.”

gaps-skills-and-use

There are certain skills and types of knowledge which have shown steady gains in the percentage of one year out respondents who strongly agree that Bowdoin has prepared them. For example, only 36% of the Class of 2011 strongly agreed that Bowdoin had prepared them to “lead and supervise groups of people.” This increased to 45% for the Class of 2013.
