In addition to these, Bowdoin has several hundred single issues, partial runs, and multiple years of unbound Maine newspapers, several hundred unbound newspapers from elsewhere in the United States and US territories, and several score bound newspapers held in special collections. These newspapers are organized alphabetically by location. The library's catalog lists only a few newspapers. Others were found by examining the microfilm section and doing word searches. The most popular newspaper titles included the words Daily, or Weekly. Some fairly successful word were: Journal, Herald, Courier, Gazette, and Chronicle. Other words used were: Telegram, Messenger, Observer, Tribune, and Palladium. Journal and Sun were not tried since the list of books titled with these words was excessive.

Newspapers Available According to the On-line Catalog of the University of Maine (URSUS):
The URSUS on-line library catalog at the University of Maine provides by far the most complete listing of newspaper holdings. It is likely that every newspaper that the library holds multiple issues of is listed in the catalog. The newspapers are divided by subject matter (Antislavery, etc), as well as location. Below is a listing of the University's African American newspapers, as well as a list of towns and themes represented in the collection and the number of different newspapers from each town. It is difficult to determine whether newspapers listed under county or theme are different than individual town newspapers. Consequently, there may be some repetition in this list. This list contains newspapers published not just in the nineteenth century, but also some from the eighteenth, and possibly the twentieth century. However, modern newspapers do not appear to be included.
